Cleaning Bones
[info]amberskyfire wrote in [info]naturalliving
Is there a natural way to clean bones that does not involve bleach? I was thinking I might like to make our turkey wishbone into a Christmas tree ornament this year, but I don't want to attract ants or roaches.

OCM
[info]westcoastred wrote in [info]naturalliving
Just wanted to share... I have oober sensitive skin that overreacts to everything, unless I leave it alone. Luckily, I learned this early, and simply splashed my face a few extra times in the shower. However, as I am fast approaching my thirties, I realize I should be doing more to safeguard my skin from the ravages of time.

So, I tried OCM using 50/50 castor and olive oils. Hated. Every. Second. As well as the following explosion. Last night, however, I used olive oil into which I'd infused lavender, chamomile, rose, comfrey, and calendula. (Well, I infused lavender, chamomile, and rose in a jar, then comfrey and calendula in another, and mixed them after straining.) Anyway, my face is so happy, smooth, and moist without being oily! Blackheads: gone! Also, I don't know if it was the OCM, or the calendula and comfrey, but my surprise lines visibly reduced, and I can't feel them any more when I rub them... yes I'm obsessed, I know at least half of you are, too. Wonderful method!

Becoming Vegetarian
[info]danceuponstars wrote in [info]naturalliving
I've been thinking about going Vegetarian and would like some feedback. I was vegetarian several years ago, but went back to meat cause I got tired of fighting with the spouse over food options. Now there is no spouse to fight with `;~)

I am mostly doing this for health reasons. I don't eat meat very often as it is and I get pretty sick when I do. Most of my foods are organic or free range. And I am not interested in going vegan for a variety of reasons.

My main concern is that I do not like most of the protien sources available. I barely like cheese, hate milk and yogurt. I do like tofu, but not tempeh or stuff like that. I also hate mushrooms with a passion. I do not eat seafood or anything from the water. I've only had fish once in the last 20 years and it was tolerable, but not something I'd like to eat on a regular basis. I do like most vegetables- I can't think of others that I *don't* like.

Secondly, I do not have a stove/oven, well I do but it is gas and I don't want to have to fill a tank *just* for the stove. I have a double burner so I can cook, but nothing complicated. I have a microwave, crockpot, and a toaster oven. Oh, and a fry-daddy which I barely use. Luckily, I live by myself so I don't need the stove/oven for the most part. But it would be nice to be able to bake things! And really cook cause I love love cooking. I'm thinking about asking my landlords to put in an electric stove.

So here are my questions....
1) With my protien issues- how difficult would it be to get enough protien.
2) How important is having an oven to a vegetarian diet
3) What appliance do you use most?
4) Can you suggest cookbooks. I have one but it is heavily oven reliant

Thanks!

Question??
[info]leilani424 wrote in [info]naturalliving
Hi! First time poster, hee!! Does anyone know a good nourishing hair spritzer? Like something you can spray on wet hair to make it healthier or shinier? I thought I'd ask here before I googled it, because ya'll seem to have personal experience with products, whereas google just throws a bunch of stuff at you. Its hard to know what websites to trust you know? So any recommendations would be awesome!! Thanks!

I cut my hair into an A-bob type thing in February. I don't plan to go that short again. Now it's finally to my shoulders!

platinum

I guess this isn't strictly "dyed hair"...just bleached and tonered out the wazoo. I've already done pretty much every color of the rainbow and wanted to try something different, so I'm giving platinum a shot. I've done lots of bright colors in the past, but I think this has been the most shocking to me personally. The towel came off and I was like, "whoa..."

Na-PCA

Has anybody here used Na-PCA from Twinlab?

I've read some great stuff about it, but haven't really ever heard from anyone who's used it. I'd love to hear how you used it and how it worked for you.

Specifically, should I use it in place of a regular moisturizer or as well as?

I'm currently using some cocoa butter balm stuff from Badger Balm on my scaly winter legs, and regular lotion on my top half.

I last had my hair cut in Sept 08, into a short layered style. I decided last November to grow it long. Here's a comparison between last November and today.

Dr. Bronner's and pets...
[info]4jinx_removing wrote in [info]naturalliving
Does anyone have experience using Dr. Bronner's liquid soap for bathing their dogs? I have a collie/aussie mix(see icon) with sensitive skin and I would really like to bathe him with the Dr. B's unscented, but I am concerned that it might make his long fur greasy or matted. I use it for my own hair, but obviously, the two of us have completely different styles and textures! Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks to all who helped me w/ my last post. NOW ... I have another question.

I'm pretty hair illiterate. I'm good at about 3 things. Ponytails, buns and braids (on other people.) I don't like to keep my hair down during the day because I'm a teacher of very small children and because my hair is so long they like to play with it, but keeping it up in a ponytail is getting a little tired. Does anyone have any quick (I like 5 mins or less in the morning) of things I can do w/ my hair that keeps it up away from my face and isn't too difficult?

TIA!!

When do you turn on the heat?
[info]assilembob wrote in [info]naturalliving
I'm trying to decide what is too cold in terms of when I should break down and turn on the heater. This is partially in a deep desire to use less electricity (both environmentally and economically) and because the heater KILLS my skin.
I'm a little concerned about my health. My animals I'm not worried about as they are chinchillas and love the cold. I have to use so much electricity in the summer (keeping them cool in the Texas summers) that I am trying to off set it a bit by not using it in the winter.

Right now the temp inside my apt is sitting at around 60. It's supposed to be in the mid 30's tonight.

Opinions please?

Is Salted Licorice Dangerous?
[info]theliveofv wrote in [info]naturalliving
Hello everyone. This is kind of an odd question. I've recently discovered salted licorice, which I adore. I've been buying it in bulk from my local candy shop and munching on it throughout the day. Today I looked it up on Wikipedia and discovered that the salty flavor in most salted licorice comes, not from sodium as I'd thought, but from ammonium chloride. It makes sense, as all the different types I've tried all have a faint (and sometimes strong) ammonia taste. I still love it, go figure. Anyway, I researched ammonium chloride and it sounds kind of scary but then again, maybe it's fine and I'm just scaring myself. Should I stay away from it, or do you think it's safe to ingest? I read that it might cause nausea and vomiting, but I haven't experienced either even after eating gigantic servings. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks!
